Privacy glass
Dark glass is not the same as tint.
Plenty of new cars arrive with dark rear glass from the factory. It looks like tint, so most owners assume the job is already done. On most cars it is not.
What it does not do
Dark and cool are two different things. On most cars, factory privacy glass does very little for infrared heat, which is the part you actually feel through the window on a hot day.
The exception
Some EVs do come with glass that has genuine heat rejecting properties built in. It is worth knowing which camp your car sits in rather than assuming either way.
What we usually recommend
A 70% clear ceramic film over the factory privacy glass. It is barely visible, so the look of the car does not change, and it adds the infrared and UV rejection the glass on its own was never doing.
In our climate you want as much coverage as you can get. Maximising heat rejection across all your side and rear glass, not just the fronts, is what gets you through a Brisbane summer.
Shades and the law
How dark is dark?
A percentage is hard to picture. This is roughly how much light each shade lets through, and where Queensland lets you run it.
Each panel blocks the share of light that film blocks, so 40% film lets roughly 40% of the light through. Your car will look slightly different again, because factory glass is already doing some of the work. Cars that came with factory privacy glass start darker again, and the legal limit applies to the finished window, film and factory glass together.
Front side windows
35% minimum. The driver and front passenger windows have to let at least 35% of light through.
Behind the driver
20% minimum. Rear side windows and the rear screen can go to 20%, provided the car has a rear vision mirror on each side.
Front windscreen
No film across it. Queensland allows a narrow band at the very top only. A full windscreen film fails inspection even when it is clear.
Reflectivity
10% maximum. Mirrored and metallic finishes fail on reflectance no matter how light the shade is.

Common questions.
What is the darkest legal tint in Queensland?
35 percent light transmission on the front side windows and 20 percent behind the driver, provided the vehicle has an external rear vision mirror on each side. Those figures apply to the glass and film combined. Goods carrying vehicles such as many utes and vans may go to zero percent behind the driver.
Does factory privacy glass count towards the Queensland tint limit?
Yes. Queensland Transport and Main Roads specifies that the requirement includes the combination of applied tint and factory tinted glass. Privacy glass has already used most of the allowance, so only a light film can be applied over it.
Can I tint my windscreen in Queensland?
Not the main viewing area. Windscreens on vehicles built from 1 July 1971 onward must transmit at least 75 percent of light. A band across the top is allowed provided it does not extend below a horizontal line touching the highest point of the original wiper sweep.
Will darker window tint keep my car cooler?
Not necessarily. Heat comes mostly from infrared radiation, which is invisible, so darkness and heat rejection are different properties. A quality ceramic film at a legal shade will outperform a dark cheap film on cabin temperature.
What happens if my window tint is too dark in Queensland?
You risk a defect notice requiring the film to be removed and redone to a compliant level, and the vehicle will not pass a safety certificate inspection, which matters when selling or transferring registration.
How do I get around while you have my car?
We drop you at Orana Car Rental in Oxley, a five minute drive from the studio, so you can hire a car for as long as we have yours. We can also run you to and from the Oxley train station. We do not keep loan cars.
